The museum is located on what used to be Mitchel Field Air Force Base. It commemorates Long Island's part in the history of aviation as well as the many aeronautic "firsts" that occurred on Long Island. The museum has more than 60 aircraft.

Some parts of the museum are devoted to space flights
Some museum planes are jet powered and others are propeller driven
Early flights were dangerous. In some ways airplane wheels developed from bicycle wheels
